Problem
Our customer was struggling with a 30-year-old chiller with an obsolete control panel. Their ongoing issues included poor reliability, challenges with control and safety protection features, and difficulty finding parts for repairs. The customer was not prepared to replace the entire chiller but wanted options to extend the life of the existing equipment and optimize it’s efficiency.
Solution
Mallory and Evans provided an option to upgrade the control panel with a new MCS Controls panel and fully integrate the new panel into the existing chiller unit. Our solution provided the chiller with better control and safety protection features including the ability to monitor the chiller remotely.
The Situation
In this case, the customer had an old Carrier 19DK chiller with a 3200MP control panel that they wanted to replace. Their goal was to replace the existing panel without replacing the primary chiller unit, and they wanted the ability to monitor the chiller remotely.
The Work
First, our team had to install several new sensors which were needed for the added features of the control panel. This work included drilling and tapping the chiller shells to add sensor wells. We installed and integrated the MCS panel to the chiller, and we were able to eliminate the antiquated dash pot overloads along with mechanical transition timers within the starter cabinet.
The Results
Our controls and service teams were able to successfully control all chiller functions as well as integrate the MCS panel into the building automation system. The project was a huge success and our customer has a new control panel plus the ability to monitor their chiller remotely with better control and visibility from the BAS.
